Being a woman in India
It is believed that when God got tired of creating only men, he created woman to remove his monotony. God made her life full of adventures which he could later watch from heaven and get amused. There is no denial in the fact that a woman’s journey is no less than a roller coaster ride. And if that woman is born in India, double the adventure!! On the occasion of international women's day, let’s highlight the plight of our Indian Women.
India is a country of vivid cultures, beliefs, faiths, colours and religions. Despite of much diversity in every sphere in this country, there is solidarity in one belief – women are naive and inferior and should always be in protection of a male member. The fate of all girls is the same no matter if she is born into a Hindu, Muslim, Sikh or a Christian family.
A woman has to fight for her life in India even before she is born into this world. Gruesome practices of female infanticide are rampant in the nation. This is because of the generations old norms that see a girl as a burden on the family whereas the son is considered as the pride and flag bearer of the family name. If she somehow manages to survive in the womb, she later has to face bundles of ordeals which she meets in her life step by step.
A woman is often considered as the homemaker. She is expected to stay at home, look after her husband and kids, cook finger licking oily food, watch daily soaps, do pooja, always smile and demand no credit for her hard work in return. In short an ideal Indian woman is the one as showcased in the movies of Suraj Barjatya – epitome of sanskars!! Every family wishes for an educated daughter in law, but are reluctant to let her pursue her career as women are not made to go out and earn, rather stay at home and serve their families. Women are subjected to exploitation everywhere. She is unsafe in her own home, her work place, roads, public transport, personal transport; one can say that wherever she puts her foot down, she is responsible for her own safety as no matter whosoever assaults her in what so ever way, she is to be blamed for that. The heart wrenching Nirbhaya Rape Case speaks volumes about the safety of women in India.
Indian woman is always judged by the society. Her modesty and character are always scrutinised by the length of her clothes and the drink in her hands. Shorter the dress shorter her character. And if a woman is seen drinking alcohol, she is titled ‘indecent”.
Being a woman in India is like being the writer of your own life, where your family is the editor. Most Indian women marry the guy chosen by their families. She is forbidden to love somebody else before her marriage. The natural phenomenon of menstruation is seen as something evil and women are treated as untouchables by their families. They are denied entry in kitchens and holy places.
Diverse as India is, it never seizes to surprise me!! No matter how the majority of women are met with indignation in India, it is still the land where women are worshipped as Goddesses. A woman is seen as Lakshmi of the house. With changing trends, people have adopted new norms and are treating women equal as men. India is the very nation which gave the world precious gems like Kalpana Chawla, Sania Mirza, Indira Gandhi, Chanda Kochhar, Indra nooyi and many more women who have taken India on a new horizon of pride and fame.
India is amongst the countries which have the highest number of female politicians. Many indian women have now entered the zones which they were considered unfit for. Indian woman is now fearless. It has shed her blanket of responsibilities and now works to achieve her desires. There is no sphere left where women have not yet displayed their calibre and proved wrong the society that doomed women to mere four walls of the house. Indian women have joined the army, bollywood, IT sectors and some have even taken up unconventional jobs like F1 racers, bus drivers, bartenders and what not!! The government of India is dedicated towards the uplifment of women
It would be unfair to stereotype the life of an Indian woman as joyous or awful as it is the combination of all that they meet in life, sometimes good, sometimes bad but non ignorant!! The mindset of the society as a whole is much responsible for the life of women as it is rightly said that behind every successful woman is a father who believed in her daughter, not in the society. Thus life of an Indian woman is tangy chutney of sweet and sour emotions which makes her a complete woman.
