PSORIASIS AND ITS DIFFERENT TYPES

Submitted by Amit Sharma on Thu, 02/04/2021 - 09:29

Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition that causes skin cells to multiply up to 10 times faster than normal skin. This makes the skin build-up to bumpy red patches appear on the elbow, scalp, knees and lower back. This is a long-lasting, non-contagious autoimmune disease that produces plaques of thickened, scaly skin. It is believed to be caused due to the reduction in all three doshas: Vata, Pitta, Kapha.

AyurvedGuru, therefore, suggests that Panchakarma Therapy is the best Ayurvedic treatment for psoriasis.

This disease may manifest itself in different types. The thick red patches and plaque depend on what type of psoriasis you have. A few people had several types of psoriasis at once.

The different types of psoriasis include:

  • Plaque Psoriasis

  • Guttate Psoriasis

  • Scalp Psoriasis

  • Pustular Psoriasis

  • Nail Psoriasis

  • Genital Psoriasis

These different types affect different areas of the skin; each has its own different set of symptoms. So, it is important to know their differences.

Plaque Psoriasis:

Plaque psoriasis is the most common type of psoriasis. Symptoms include red, dry skin patches with silvery-white scales of different sizes. They usually show up on the scalp, elbow, knees and lower back. Some scales are fairly small while others cover big areas. These red patches may crack or bleed. The more you scratch, the thicker they can get.

This type of psoriasis can be chronic, for which certain triggers can cause more severe flare-ups. You can get it at any age, but it’s more common in adults.

PSORIASIS AND ITS DIFFERENT TYPES

Guttate Psoriasis:

Kids and adults are more likely to get this type. Guttate psoriasis describes the pattern of teardrops shaped patches less than 1 cm in size. These small red dots appear suddenly on arms, ears, legs, and face, usually in the middle of the body.

People who have Guttate psoriasis can develop Plaque psoriasis easily. Guttate psoriasis can be a reaction to a trigger, such as strep throat, flu, cold, and upper respiratory infections.

Scalp Psoriasis:

Symptoms of scalp psoriasis could be embarrassing for the people because it looks like dandruff and visible on the clothes. For some people, the scalp is the first and only affected area by psoriasis. This type can cover the whole head but can develop on the other parts of the body too like forehead, back of the head, and around your ears.

Pustular Psoriasis:

Pustular psoriasis is a rare type of psoriasis in which pus-filled blisters form on the skin. This type might be a reaction to an infection, stress, and medications. When these pus-filled bumps dry out, they turn yellow-brown and scaly.

It usually occurs on the palms of your hands or the bottom of your feet, leaving the skin cracked and painful.

Nail Psoriasis:

Psoriasis also affects the nails. Your toenails and fingernails may get thick, develop pinprick holes and change colour. At first, people thought it was a fungal infection. Chalky white material can gather under your nails. Nails become so weak that they come out of the nail bed. In severe cases, nail changes make it hard to move your fingers and toes.

Genital Psoriasis:

Genital psoriasis develops around your genital area. When the areas such as vulva, penis or bottom are affected is Genital psoriasis. It can also appear on the upper thigh; the skin folds up between the thighs or buttocks. It is also known as Inverse psoriasis when it occurs within the skin folds. It can be physically very uncomfortable and hard to determine the triggering factors.
