Scabies is a skin infestation, popularly known as Itching. It is a highly contagious skin disease and spreads rapidly under crowded conditions where close body contact is frequent. Public transport stations, hospitals and prisons are often sites of Scabies outbreaks. Most outbreaks of Scabies occur in the winter because people do not bother about their health and cleanliness and tend to spend more time indoors and closer to each other at this time of year. It is a very common skin disease and can affect anyone of any race and age worldwide.
In general, the average number of mites on an infested person is 12-14 but those with immunocompromised may have thousands of mites and are particularly vulnerable to another severe form of Scabies, known as Norwegian or Crusted scabies. People with Crusted Scabies may develop thick crusts of the skin that contain thousands of mites.
In Ayurveda Scabies is known as Kachchhu.
Scabies is caused by infestation by an eight-legged human itch mite Sarcoptes scabiei. These mites burrow into the outer layer of the skin and cause the symptoms of rashes and itching. Scabies mites like warm places. They can cause Scabies rashes in the body areas such as skin folds, under fingernails, between the fingers, around the buttock or breast creases.
How scabies is spread?
Scabies mites can neither fly nor jump. Hence, they can only move from an infected to the uninfected person through prolonged physical contact such as sharing the belongings with affected person and prolonged bodily contacts. A quick handshake however, does not spread scabies infection.
It takes up to six to eight weeks for the symptoms of Scabies to appear after the initial infection because this is how long it takes for the body to react to the mite eggs or feces. Intense itching (Pruritus), especially at night, is the earliest and most common symptom of Scabies. The intense itching associated with Scabies is thought to be caused by the reaction of our immune system to the mites and their eggs saliva, and feces. Pimple-like itchy rashes on the skin areas where the mites have burrowed are also commonly observed in Scabies.
