Psoriasis is a long-lasting skin disease associated with the immune system. It is a chronic and noncontagious skin condition characterized by inflamed lesions covered with silvery-white scabs of dead skin. Like most chronic diseases, Psoriasis is also associated with a number of major ailments such as psoriatic arthritis, Type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. With normal skin, the body takes about 28 to 30 days to produce new skin cells and shed the old ones. However, the skin affected by Psoriasis takes only three to four days to develop new skin cells. Because, the body cannot shed old skin as rapidly as the new cells appear, the dead skin cells pile up and form lesions. The skin also becomes red due to increased blood flow.
Psoriasis can range from mild to severe depending upon the body area under effect. It is considered mild if less than 5% of the body area is affected; moderate, if 5 to 30% of the skin is involved and severe if the disease covers more than 30% of the body area. Psoriasis influences both the sexes equally and might begin at any stage. It can occur on the scalp, nails and joints. People who have psoriasis are more likely to have psoriatic arthritis.
There are still doubts about what exactly causes Psoriasis. However, a combination of environmental, hereditary and immunologic factors causes thick patches of red, dry and itchy skin. Environmental factors such as stress, injuries and infections, drug reactions, sudden trauma and smoking may trigger the Psoriasis genes. In some cases, the immune system is mistakenly triggered, which causes the skin cells to grow faster than normal. This rapid growth causes cells to accumulate on the skin’s surface resulting in thick patches of red, dry, and itchy skin.
The most common symptoms of psoriasis are skin rashes or red patches covered with silvery-white scabs of dead skin that may itch or burn. Psoriasis on the scalp is different from that of dandruff. Dandruff shed greasy skin scales while scalp psoriasis scales are dry. In severe cases, the skin may crack and bleed and is prone to infections.
At present, there is no cure for psoriasis. However, the disease can be managed by the treatment. No system of medicine other than Ayurveda is able to control the symptoms from getting worse with minimum complications. Detoxification of the body or elimination of toxins from body fluids is considered as very essential for curing psoriasis. It is achieved by Panchakarma treatments, practiced by AyurvedGuru. The patient has to follow a complete vegetarian diet during the entire treatment period. Medicated pads applied with a paste of medicines and mud are pasted on the affected areas. The treatment has a high success rate and is free of major complications. Herbal concoctions, oral medicines and pain-relief ointments are also manufactured by AyurvedGuru.
