Leucoderma, also known as Vitiligo is a condition in which the skin loses melanin, the pigment that decides the shade of the skin, hair and eyes and protects the skin against harmful ultraviolet radiations. It occurs when the cells that produce melanin die or stop producing melanin, causing gradual development of white patches of irregular shapes to appear on the skin. Initially, the patches are small in size and start increasing over the time. Leukoderma is not a cancerous or pre-cancerous disease and is absolutely a noncontagious disease.
Vitiligo is sometimes used as synonyms for Leucoderma. Both are known as “white patches”. The only difference between both lies in their cause. The former is self-generated while the latter can occur after a cut, a burn or as a consequence of drug reactions and hence is accidental.
Leucoderma can occur anywhere on the body where there are pigment cells. It generally affects the sun-exposed areas of the body. It affects both the genders of all races equally but people with darker skin may easily develop the disorder. Although, Leucoderma is not harmful medically, for some people it can be bothersome.
The exact cause of Leucoderma or Vitiligo is not yet fully known. However, several different theories say that a combination of environmental, hereditary and immunologic factors causes the skin to lose its pigmentation. The most widely accepted fact is that depigmentation occurs because Vitiligo is an autoimmune disorder- a disorder in which a person’s immune system mistakenly attacks some part of his own body’s cells and tissues. It is believed that in Vitiligo body’s immune system destroy its own melanocytes, the pigment cells. Further, it has been observed that Vitiligo can run in families and single or more inherited genes may be enough to make a person more likely to get the disorder. In addition, emotional problems, stress, sunburn and use of harsh antibiotics can also cause onset of the disease.
According to texts of Ayurveda, Vitiligo is caused due to intake of mutually contradictory foods such as intake of fish and milk together. Suppression of natural urges, regular stress, and intense exercise after having a heavy meal may also cause Vitiligo.
Appearance of white patches of variable sizes on the skin marks the onset of Vitiligo. Other less common signs include premature greying of the hair on the scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes and facial hair. Even, eye may lose some of its color.
Vitiligo or Leucoderma is known as ‘Kilas’ in Ayurveda. There are many forms of treatment available but none is able to uproot the root cause of the disease except an ayurvedic treatment. The treatment is lengthy but is the safest and most effective in restoring color to the white patches of skin. Also, it requires some of the dietary and lifestyle changes. As Vitiligo is a tridosha disorder, the treatment aims at balancing all the three doshas. Agnijith, an herbal medicine has been proved result-oriented in preventing the loss of pigment cells from the skin. Herbs that act as immunity rectifiers and promote the blood circulation are given as medicines in the form of creams, powders, oil and oral pills to the patient.
