Eczema, often known as Atopic Dermatitis is defined as the inflammation of the upper layer of the skin, the epidermis. It is an allergic, inflammatory and irritating skin condition which causes dryness and rashes on the skin when scratched. The rash of Eczema may look different and can affect different body parts for each person. Eczema typically affects the folds of the knees and elbows, skin creases around the neck and front of the ankles, the face and cheeks (in children under four years), but can cover most of the body. Eczema is a general term to describe any type of dermatitis that is itchy. People with Eczema have a tendency to overheat easily as their skin does not regulate the body temperature properly. Eczema is not contagious. It is genetically determined, inherited from one’s parents.
In Ayurveda, Eczema is known as “Vicharchika”. It is caused due to the vitiation of tri-doshas -vata, pitta and kapha. The pitta vitiated Vicharchika is the most common.
Who Gets Eczema?
Eczema is most common in babies and children. But it can happen to anyone. People living in cities and dry climates are more likely to develop the disease. When children with Eczema grow older, the problem can improve or go away but the skin remains dry and sensitive.
The exact cause of Eczema is unknown. But it is believed to be caused by both hereditary and environmental factors. When the body’s immune system overreacts to an allergen, the response causes the symptoms of Eczema. Also, the skin problems which damage the skin barrier cause Eczema as the skin is unable to regulate the temperature and keep the moisture in and germs out. Further, Eczema is common among those with a history of allergic diseases, such as hay fever or asthma.

According to texts of Ayurveda, Eczema (Vicharchika) is caused due to unhealthy diet and lifestyle activities which result in impairment of digestion and aggravation of pitta dosha. As every human being is genetically different with different constitutions and patterns, Ayurveda recommends a specialized treatment plan for patients of Eczema, including a healthy diet and specialized herbal combinations. Use of allopathic drugs, lotions and creams just cover the side effects without removing the root cause-ama (a by-product of indigestion). AyurvedGuru involves a treatment plan for Eczema that works on pacifying the pitta dosha by enhancing the body’s digestion, as well as cleansing the deep-seated toxins, commencing with snehana, swedana and Panchakarma.
