The common cold (also known as nasopharyngitis, rhinopharyngitis, acute coryza, head cold, or simply cold) is mostly accompanied with cough and can be quite an uneasy condition to deal with. It is a viral infection of the upper respiratory tract- the nose and throat. It can be caused due to some allergic disorders, weak immune system or sometimes due to changes in the weather. It can be spread from an infected person to another through direct contact like sneezing, hand-shaking etc.
According to Ayurveda, common cough and cold are caused by aggravation of Kapha dosha. It is also caused by poor digestion. When the food we eat is not fully digested it changes into ama. When this mucus or ama, reaches the respiratory tract, it causes cold or a cough. Other causes are exposure to cold or humid conditions, cold air, lungs irritants and air pollutants.
