Rheumatic diseases affect people of both sexes, all ethnic groups and ages. The frequency increases with age and as many as 40% of persons over the age of 65 years in U.K. have had some kind of rheumatic disorders.  Rheumatoid Arthritis is the commonest form of inflammatory joint diseases. In its typical form, Rheumatoid Arthritis is a symmetrical, destructive and deforming poly-arthritis, affecting small and large peripheral joints with associated systemic disturbance, a variety of extra articular features, and the presence of circulating anti-globulin anti-bodies (rheumatoid factor).

CLINICAL FEATURES:
In the majority of patients, the onset is insidious with joint pain, stiffness and symmetrical swelling of number of peripheral joints. Initially pain may be experienced only on movement of joints, but rest pain and morning stiffness are characteristic feature of all kinds of inflammatory arthritis.
In typical cases the small joints of fingers and toes are first affected, as disease progresses, there is tendency for it to spread to involve the wrists, elbow, shoulders, knees, ankles, and other
joints.
